Re: What was your early inspiration?

After many years of Tri-ang Hornby as a child, It was David Jenkinson's excellent, if somewhat mis-titled book, "Modelling Historic Railways" that got me back into railway modelling when I came across it in an Exeter library in 1985. I borrowed it for six months on the trot, and read it fr...

A dodgy-but-enjoyable duo

Here's the pair of locomotives that I ran on freight duties at today's Western Union meet in Plymouth. The RS11/GP9 combination sounded wonderful, and didn't look half bad, either.

Re: Operations - Recommended Reading

Dear L05464 (or may I call you L05 ?) Great links and many thanks. It would be great to get some more information in respect of your experiences operating on Mike Tricker's layout. Do I perceive, L05, that your name may be Keith, and that you are presently NMRA(BR) President? There's a link somewher...

Re: Cleveland Convention 2014

Thanks for this, Kathy. Your blog is fab, and is recommended reading to all. My only criticism is that the mouth-watering food pictures from your recent US trip create a step too far.

Permanente Local

A few days ago, Rob Mallett and I had a lot of fun creating an accurate rendition of Southern Pacific's Permanente Local.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Recommended sound decoders Athearn RTR GP40

I would always recommend the Loksound Select or V4. The motor control is wonderful, straight out of the box, and rarely needs any tweaking. The sounds can also be upgraded when new or better are released, and are in some cases better than Tsunami. The horn sounds are almost all much better. Tsunamis...

Cab Forward fun

I picked up an MTH Southern Pacific AC-6 Cab Forward a couple of weeks ago, in a swap for 6 Trix UP 40' boxcars. The owner of the AC-6 was happy to part with it, as the smoke generator and headlight had stopped working, and also because, despite what MTH claims, their own-brand non-DCC decoder is no...

Thank you for that, Keith.

Other inquiring minds would also like to know, since the site still receives a reasonable number of visitors.

Re: Layout suggestions for RDCs & Doodlebugs

You don't even need a depot, if it takes up too much space. just a small platform, and possibly a space to park a mail truck. Older doodlebugs sometimes pulled a mail or other coach, or a couple of boxcars, and switched them too. Budd RDCs did the same on rare occasions, but the manufacturer's instr...

Re: Achievement Programme - Chief Dispatcher

I'm sure that at least a few of us have put in a very large bag of hours on Yardmaster/Engineer/Conductor/Dispatcher duties that would fit into the descriptions that satisfy the NMRA rules. We've been "operating" most months for at least a couple of years now.

Re: Module spec release 2

If not approved, who are you anticipating will approve it? I am not sure there is a process beyond the working group now approving any uodates to the recommended specification. I can put it to the BOD for approval if that is what we think is needed. I am inclined to place an updated version 2 on th...

Re: Single Track Module Set

All I can add is that I eventually plan to do a single-track "spacer" module in HO, and mine will depict a city street running scene, with lots of buildings made from DPM packs (some semi-flat), and probably a grade crossing. An expanded version of Andy Gautrey's Grunge Street. http://www....
