Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hi Mike You're quite right, I can't easily put up 12 feet of railway at home, there is one place way I could just about do it but it is just so impractical. At the moment two of the boards are up on the bottom landing but I can't leave the third up as it blocks the stairs. Once construction and lots...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hello Brian Thanks for your comments. In my initial post starting this topic I mentioned that the boards have already been built to the requirements of the earlier Thamesiders branch line standard. This standard is based on a minimum 12" wide module with track centred and uses locating dowels. ...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

As promised yesterday I have drafted a further plan without the crossover. I have also slightly tweaked the paper plant tracks to get a little additional length. http://geofftiller.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/chicagoland-module-version-4-small.jpg As before any comments would be very welcome. T...

Re: Plastic products manufacturer

I saw this one on my google map viewing of the area but didn't find the photos on Flickr, (i've not been a big Flickr user so far) thanks for the heads up. He's also got some short videos of the genset switching, it sounds weird when you're used to EMDs and GEs but looks great in the bright orange.

Re: Grain Elevators

I had a look at the Cameron Elevator, it looks like it would make a nice model. I also had a look at the earlier one you found The other (less modelling-friendly!) end of the scale is something like this - Western Grain Marketing of Adair IL, they have a unit train loading loop for quick and efficie...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Back on topic this time. While doing a few other bits this evening I've had a look at some plans. This first one was done before I found the Blue Island area and tries to include the core Chicago industries as suggested by Martyn with some of the look of the older industrial areas. http://geofftille...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

remaining OT for now, When I see a call for modules on the main Free-Mo yahoo group it can 8 to 12 moths in advance of the setup (depending upon the show, size of space etc) this ensures builders have a lot of notice and should allow the run chief to build the best layout design. While I think Marty...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hi Guys I have a pair of the new Gensets on order with Penguin and am thinking about ordering one or two of the SW1500s in the Tennessee orange scheme. I have a bunch of older blue box SW1500s which I hope to paint and decal in the previous black scheme. When I responded to Peter's earlier comment I...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hi All I've been spending rather too much time on Google Maps researching Chicagoland for ideas for this module, not only does a full paper mill not really fit the IHB I feel rather intimidated by the idea of attempting to produce a model of such a big and complex industry. Not only are there indust...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hi Mike/Peter I'd not thought about having an agreed description/theme notation for modules, at least in part because we have two different, but connected, module systems in Thameisders. We have a "main" or "mainline" standard and a "branch" standard. Given the single N...

Re: Steel Mills

Thats a lot more model and module friendly then I thought it might be, being squeezed in on all sides makes for a very interesting plant. one of our members is collection steel industry related cars and has expressed an interest in a steel mill module so I'll point this thread out to him.

Re: Essex Belt Lines at Ally Pally

I can only agree with Dan, without the RS Tower layout and the modules leading the way I am not sure we would have gone quite so far. We are all very pleased with how our weekend went and the comments, both at the show and on the web since, have been very gratifying. The response to the layout is al...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

I can see the problems you suggest, and in fact we did see the same on the EBL where a couple of industries can block the main when switching. Martyn, you point about a paper mill not being very Chicago is spot on, I have had a look at the Morning Sun IHB book earlier and had a scout around on Googl...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hi Mike The more I look at your plan the more I see how it could operate. I was wondering how it might look, and work, if the module connection on the left board continued off the mill track rather then having a main around the mill so I have put together a modified version of you plan in Anyrail. T...

Re: Switching area module - a design challenge?

Hi MIke Well here is my first idea. Based on the paper mill and cement works in Glen falls. Actually looking South gives a better view of tracks in the paper mill as well as the cement works. Thanks very much for the plan, I have a few ideas whch I need to put down, I use Anyrail (runs fine using Wi...
