Re: California Northern layout in HO
When sieving ballast or soil with a tea strainer (last stage of sieving) I use a Pringle lid on the tea strainer held down with a finger.

Re: North Fork Springs
I've finally connected the lights on the chip loader, I still need a few on the building ends and a light pole in the lumber yard. The sawmills will soon have sound, I have an ITTC unit, I just need to build the timer circuit to work it. http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm127/mikeruby_photos/North...

Re: DCC loco decoders.
I have a couple of the first Digitrax sound decoders, I'm not too impressed with the running and have replaced with Loksound. I plan to put them in a pair of Budds, where speed matching with the rest of the fleet doesn't matter. Agree with DecoderPro, I'm a long time user and would hate to go back t...

Re: Basic scenery
I use smooth ceiling paint (artex) for my scenery. It is painted on top of either foam, or if open underneath, a cardboard web with the paint used to stick squares of weed suppression material on the web in several layers. Unlike plaster the paint stays flexible so doesn't crack. On top of that goes...

Re: Passenger line speeds.
Approaching the terminal, trains would be slowing to enter the platforms, but on leaving would only be restricted by the turnouts, maybe medium speed. The real question is are the passenger tracks inside yard limits? I think that they are not, as the passenger tracks are separate from the freight ya...

Re: DCC for NMRA BR modules
You can use a.c. or smoothed d.c. The voltage in should be a few volts over the required output voltage, too much and it can't deliver full power before overheating and shutting down. The supply current should be higher than the unit's overload. Try page 19 of the LZV V3.6 manual. You can download i...

Passenger line speeds.
A question was asked at the Broadclyst meeting that I didn't know the answer to. Would yard limits be enforced on the approach into a station? or would it be treated as line speed, especially when departing? So on my module, 11th Avenue, the freight yard would be 15 mph, but the platform approaches ...

A SD40-2 with working horn would be more to my liking.

Definitely put something on the adjusting bolts. I use bottle tops. Not only do they protect the floor they also make it easier to turn the bolts.

Re: DCC for NMRA BR modules
I wouldn't have mattered, NCE uses the same 6 pin RJ12 connector, and you could have plugged NCE into the back of the lenz panel and plugged the throttle into the front. Lenz and NCE use the same four wires, in fact they use the same communication system, if only it was the same codes! €200 is a goo...

Useful made up tools
I have made up many useful tools that make life easier, such as these viewtopic.php?f=20&t=148.
Has anyone else made a tool that the rest of us would find useful?

Re: a small tip for kadees
Good idea, although I have so many spare boxes that if I have to take one apart I can just use a new box. When fitting Kadees (100% on my layout) and using a cast on box I make sure the box and lid are smooth, several manufacturers have moulding marks in them. I also coat the inside with graphite fr...

Re: Track level
I should add that the bit of bent metal in two photos is my favourite track reworking tool. It is bent from a bit of nickelsilver plate. The plain end is used to lever track up from alongside a spike or pin, preventing the rail being ripped off the ties, and was very useful for this levelling job af...
