I think that decal sheet takes you as far as the 1980s to 00s black with orange lettering scheme (bottom one on the sheet) - pretty confident the base colour on that really is black, although looking at other pics the earlier 'dark' schemes may not have been? The one above on the sheet is for an old...

Yes it did me too - looking at it one advantage is that you get a big pot of each colour, I have Tamiya sets where i've nearly finished one colour but hardly touched the others, so being able to just buy the colours you use lots of and ignore the others may be an advantage?

Pretty similar to my own core interests Chris, late 1970s Chicago is probably my core at the moment (although I started out with circa 1973 BN in the Pacific NW!) - currently there's Santa Fe, BN, ICG, RI and N&W represented. I keep getting distracted (modelling-wise) by modern railroading thoug...
