Naming your layout

Quite often, we choose to build a railroad of a fictious place, but has a certain locale, and we need a name for it.
I find this is usually quite a hard thing to do, they end up sounding too British, or not correct for the state / area.

I found a website where you can select your region , from the entire US to a certain state and have it generate fake place names, fitting for that area.

I hope you find it useful.

That's pretty good....

Koggiung, IL
Spy Hill, IL
Weeki Wachee, IL
Soaptown, IL
Dwarf, IL
Nipomo, IL
Drawbridge, IL
Speedway, IL
Sambo, IL
Alliance, IL

Doing a quick search in google maps, it looks like what it does is find town names from other states that don't already appear in your chosen one...

Yes, so it appears and what I thought was a complete fantasy name, I mean 'Spunky Puddle' , turns out to be a place in Ohio.... :D

Not mine this time :-)

I think I might be going for Tree Point,WI. It sounds a bit like 3 points, which is exactly the number of turnouts on the module :-)
I've got a few more to consider though, so I'm going to sleep on it :-)

PS:

here's a few more I found earlier, 'On a Slant Village is another classic :-) It exists in North Dakota, and here's it's history, which is interesting enough :-)

The Tree Point spur? :) Like that.

Quite like Metinota as well, there's a real Mendota, and the similar sounds make it quite plausible.

Thrash is obviously on a shortline run by Alco's... ;)

Hi Martyn,

I 'slept' on it , and I have decided that it will be named 'Tree Point'. The way you put it sounded good too, futher confirming a good choice.

No comment on the Alco's
