   Obituaries...
He stayed in London with friends for a while, before staying in Crediton for a year or two. He finally came and settled in Bath in the early 80’s.
George was a modeller from an early age and worked part-time in a Chicago hobby shop before the War, where he met many of the pioneers of ‘HO’ and made some contribution to HO’s development him- self. George continued his modelling throughout his life and became a skilled builder of locomotives and rolling stock – and maybe one of the first ‘kitbashers’. He was seldom satisfied with ready-to-run equipment and managed to make even the worst ‘sow’s ears’ into beautiful ‘silk purses’. His interest was not only confined to US outline but encompassed European prototype, and even some Iranian. Much of his equipment was lettered for his own Middle East Railroad, but everything he touched became a model railroading work of art.
Amongst his other interests were classical music, cats, and grand prix motor racing – which he greatly enjoyed watching on TV George possessed an extremely dry wit and a great sense of humour, which we will all fondly remember – even recipients of a (deserved?) ‘tongue lashing’!
George was cremated at Haycome Crematorium, Bath, on December 5th
 George Pendleton
14th August 1912 - 22nd November 1996
It is with deep regret that we have to report the passing of George, aged 84. He was well known to many modellers in the British Region and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
George was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up there. He trained as an architectural draughstman in Chicago and worked for the US Navy till midway through the Second World War, when he signed on as a fireman with his beloved Pennsylvania Railroad. He then worked in yard and transfer service for the rest of the War, around Chicago Southside. When peace returned George resumed draughtsmanship. He married and had a daughter. Later he divorced and began working abroad, ending up in Iran, where he settled. He retired from draughtsman- ship and became a partner in the leading European restaurant in Tehran. These years were amongst his happiest, and he especially enjoyed tending bar. He also managed to tour much of Europe. This lifestyle came to an abrupt end when the Shah was deposed and the Ayatollahs came to power. George packed up and left within three days, coming to the UK.
1996, and our thanks go to all who were there to see him off.
We’re sure that all members will join us in expressing our deepest sympathy to his sister Betsy and her husband Nick, his only surviving close relatives.
Finally, George would have roared with laughter at the apology for absence received from Fred Phelps, who said “I’m sure George will have found himself a nice warm spot in the hereafter, where his stoking experience may prove useful!” Dave McLaughlin, Derek Frow, John Spratley
Peter Binns
(Notified to Roundhouse by Lawson Little)
Black Diamond member Peter Binns, aged 67, of Nottingham, died suddenly on 21st November 1996 after a very short illness. Although a keen NMRA member he actu- ally modelled the Southern Railway (of England), having completed a fine and accurate OO model of the Barnstaple Branch, correct even to the fierce gradi- ents, in a purpose-built garden shed. All his stock was fitted with Kadees for oper- ating convenience.
Lawson Little and Derrick Bagshaw repre- sented the British Region at Peter’s funeral on November 25th. Our sympathies are extended to his children and friends.
