Bob Taylor reports The British Region Winter Meet
Rock Springs
Once again the NMRA/BR road show visited the west country.
On Saturday 4-2-00 the Cyder Belt Division hosted the winter meet at Nailsea’s Scotch Horn Centre. For those members booby- trapped by the local road works, these were advertised as starting on Monday 7-2-00, so when our “how-to-get-there” map was is- sued in December’s Roundhouse, our day of Playing with Trains should have been over before the road works started.
The day was master-minded by Region President Mike Spray as- sisted by over a dozen Cyder Belt and Red Dragon members, who on arrival just after 8 am found Big John and Rock Springs al- ready there. After moving chairs and tables to suit the floor plan, helping unload layouts and trade good, a visit was made to the tea bar to sample the local brew (not as good as Claverton’s Pres- idential Brew.)
Traders present: LSWR (Terry Page), Camden Miniature Steam Services (Adam Harris), Big John’s trains (John and Mary Hey), Totally Trains (Peter Churchus), SPV (Ann and Ian Andrews), Ceepeear Models (Ken Needham), Sunningwell Command Con- trol Ltd DCC (Ted Smale) and finally, not a trader but still impor- tant, the Region Library.
Layouts comprised O scale from the distant land of “Camel Val- ley”, 37’ x 16’, the HO “Rock Springs” from South Devon 36’ x 12’, and N scale 8’ x 2’ called “Somewhere in Colorado”, by a Cyder Belt member, which had been partly built at Claverton and in his garage. All scales offered running rights for the test running of purchases.
Attendance was around 200, members and guests, with visitors travelling from as far as Sussex to Cornwall, and at least as far north as Yorkshire. About 500 tickets were sold for the 15 raffle prizes to be won.
Last year’s complaints - cold feet and lack of room in the catering area - were not repeated. One trader came prepared to be cold and ended up taking of a layer of jumpers.
To save his embarrassment, the member who left his layout con- trol panel at home shall remained unnamed!
Rock Springs ... a footnote from Mike Warren Group Secretary, Southwesterners HO Modelling Group
We took Rock Springs to Nailsea and wish to congratulate Mike Spray for another well organised and enjoyable day. Special thanks to the “heavy gang” for their willing assistance in assembling and dismantling the layout. Rock Springs was well received - thanks to those many visitors who made appreciative comments. Enquiries were received about our availability for model railway shows, highlighting the need for us to become better organ- ised. Thus anyone who would like information about our Exeter running days, or our show availability should please phone me on 01823-257661. By the time you read this we will have attended Mr. Milby’s Ulverston meet. Proposed future running days, subject to venue availability, will be 15/16 April and 13/14 May. Show dates included April 29 - Totally Trains, Totally American show, at Ross on Wye, and June 3/4 - Exe MRC at Exeter.
Lost at Nailsea... Finally one of our number, Leigh Bowen, lost a Carnival Cruises dark blue T-shirt at Nailsea. Would anyone who knows of its where- abouts contact me as above. ●
