   The East Midlands Model
Railway Exhibition 2000
Retrospect...
From John Wright
The Nottingham Bulwell Model Railway Society has recently developed a policy of promoting North American modelling in its annual exhibition. At the instigation of exhibition organiser Ian Trivett, March 4th & 5th 2000 saw for the second successive year, a significant section of the show devoted to many aspects of model railroading. Three layouts were on show in the American section, “Rogers Pass”, an N gauge snow scene by Roger Nichols, “Forest Grove”, a switching layout in HO by Roger Epps and “Bellows Falls” by Bob Smith in HO. This layout will be at the Bradford Convention and is a close copy of an actual location in New England.
Complimenting the layouts were a number of demonstration stands. Les Pritchard was scratchbuilding a number of structures in Plastikard, and Ian Askew and Nick Quinn were carrying out rolling stock modifications, conversion and detailing in N & HO respectively.
Keith Webb brought a display of UP Big Boys in a range of scales from N to Gauge 1, the latter being a multi thousand pounds complex of electronic gizmos which delighted the punters young and old alike. Yours truly did a Proto 87 demo featuring one board of “Federal St.” combined with promotion of the British Region with a box of freebies supplied by John Hey and a computer showing our website.
Kadee and the Model Railroader had sent across displays and we also had a video set-up showing tapes from SPV. To add to all this the Bulwell Society offered reduced entrance charges to card carrying members. It was a measure of the interest shown by the visitors that Keith and I were constantly busy handling queries and supplying information. Numerous members introduced themselves over the course of the weekend and I was especially pleased to find almost all of our membership forms had been given out by the Sunday evening. Even more surprising was meeting two fellow Proto 87 modellers, alas they were modellers of the European scene but it’s nice to know there are others as crazy as myself.
Following the success of this year’s event the organisers have decided that the exhibition has now outgrown the Victoria Leisure Centre and next year’s venue and date will be new:
2001 East Midlands Model Railway Exhibition
Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th March 2001
Harvey Hadden Sports Centre, Bilborough Park, Wigman Road, Bilborough, Nottingham.
Details later in the year.
