prospect that his son might not get the best out of his trip without a tip or two, I spoke with his son on the phone and offered the following advice.
Tip 1 - To get the optimum benefit of Cajon Pass (and the Mojave Desert east of Barstow if you go that far) go the whole hog and hire a 4-wheel drive “sports utility vehicle” (SUV - Chevvy Blazer or equivalent) with high clearance to get onto those dirt roads that run trackside.
Tip 2 - All Aboard Model Railroad Emporium in Torrance, on the north side of Pacific Coast Highway (see their ad’. in “Bulletin”) is well worth a visit if you touch down before 3.00pm local time (or on the way back to airport on your last day). They discount everything and have a wide ranging stock of RTR, kits and bits and even some brass.
Tip 3 - First night stay in Day’s Inn at 2830 Iowa Avenue (Iowa Avenue or La Cadena Drive exits off Interstate 215 northbound) in Highgrove (just beyond Riverside). It is over an hour’s drive from LA but well worth it because it has a 24- hour diner out front (Yum Yums!) - and you will be awake by about 3.00am as your body clock kicks in.
It is also close to the BNSF main just north-east of Riverside, with UP trackage rights and is only 30 minutes drive to Long’s Drugstore in Moreno Valley. Rooms 419 and 421 have obscured views of the tracks but there is a night long procession of eastbound stack trains so do not book those rooms if you are a light sleeper!

think about sharing my experiences with members at large. Essentially, my objective is to ensure you get up and out from LAX and not down and out in Beverly Hills!
The start of the conversation with the member was that his son was off the LA with no more than an air ticket, a car hire voucher and a Rand McNally road map - and his hope was to go to Cajon and Tehachapi and visit a model railroad store or two along the way. With the
A few tips on where to stay and where to go to get the maximum out of any trip to see modern Class 1 Railroad operations in Southern California, by Mike Arnold
Having been fortunate enough to be able to go to the LA area and out to Cajon Pass and Tehachapi a few times over recent years, a recent conversation with a fellow NMRA member about his son’s upcoming trip out West prompted me to
