End of an Era W Alan Corkill
By Xmas 2005 a well-known model shop in Vancouver, BC is expected to have closed. Van Hobbies was started in 1947 by Phil Crawley and Ron Small and within a few years had started to import a long line of Canadian brass models, which I think started with a Canadian Pacific semi streamlined F-2-a class 4-4-4 copied from a scratchbuilt model by AI Schwartz (I hope I have it right).
Pacific Pike did a D10 class 4-6-0 with open frame motor and solid frames (no springs) which was crude by today’s standards but all there was at the time. Before long ‘oriental craftsmen’ were producing Royal Hudson 4-6-4s to rival a Tenshodo version but the big breakthrough came when they obtained early models by an unknown manufacturer called SamHongsa. First efforts were imperfect but they learned quickly and by 1980 the CPR S2a class 2-10-2s were just about perfect in every way.
Like the Japanese, the Koreans priced themselves out of the aver- age modeller’s range, and new names took over. The last two pro- jects included several versions of CPR Hudsons and Royal Hud- sons complete with coasting drive and a lift-off cab to reveal fully detailed interiors. Also Canadian National U-1-a/b class 4-8-2s
with forward-mounted Elesco heaters giving a rugged look. My own effort was a U-1-b made by converting a U-1-f or Bullet Nosed Betty, but I was hoping to use a spare tender. Alas, no spare tenders were made so it was a case of ‘back to the work- bench’.
A final project to do versions of CPR classes D9 and D10 4-6-0s came to nothing because too few orders were received from model shops and collectors. All too often the orders came pouring in too late – after models had been made and distributed. But that was life, and I ended up having finished my own D9 4-6- 0 and tender as a one-off. There aren’t many such scratchbuilt models about these days, more’s the pity.
British Railway Modellers of North America did a long series of splendid picture books to help modellers of Canadian – and some American – scenes, but these too have dwindled and costs of production have persuaded Canadian Rail Car Pictorial of Calgary to cease turning out colour booklets dealing with freight cars. Altogether this is not a good time for serious modellers, but anybody who has models and books and booklets no longer on sale might like to take care of what they have and pass it on to a safe place when they no longer have uses for them.
