Changes
Please note new email address for contest chairman Terry Wynne, which is:

Also note the change for Calder Northern’s October meet, brought forward to the 7th. This will be a Canadianthemed meet. Details later.
John Hey . . .
. . . is asking for new layouts for Derby 2008. These new layouts should ‘definitely’ be completed by April 2008. Email John at Jheytrains@aol.com please with details, using SUBJECT DERBY 2008.
Toad Spratley . . .
. . . gave me further information on the strange Mallet mentioned in the last issue’s editorial. He has a factorypainted example and it represents the original B&O 0660 ‘Old Maude’, the first Mallet in the USA.
Meet and Convention organisers:
Please don’t forget to keep us up to date with latest news, forthcoming meet dates etc. Deadline for next (August) issue is 24 June.
Caption-itis . . .
. . . struck again in the April issue. Centre left on page 12 has its correct caption (below) but also a redundant one from the previous issue mentioning Jym Phillips’ Royal Hudson!
John Knight
During March I had the sad duty of overseeing the disposal of the model railroad estate of the late John Knight. He had wished this to
benefit NMRA BR to some degree, and I am please to announce that over £2500 ended up in our account. Thanks go to Vic Stone for helping me save these assets and arrange for their sale.
John died with an unsigned will, so although his wishes were known they were not legally valid. However the local council (Adur District) in the form of their environmental health officer Bruce Reynolds, were extremely understanding, and were able to exercise a degree of leeway, otherwise everything would have gone to a certain G Brown Esq, of Downing Street. As it is, 50% of the model railroad value, and all of the rest of the estate, did go in that direction, no doubt for the pur pose of acting as a filler of black holes.
As Dave Burman remarked to me in a sub sequent phone conversation, we should all give a lot of thought to these unpleasant but inevitable events that will come our way in due course, and try to ensure that our family and friends have as little trouble as possible in seeing that our model railroad empires (and other assets, of course) find a worthwhile home and realise their true value.

‘Hello Rodders,
I'd like to thank you for sending me the Feb 2007 issue of Roundhouse. It’s very good. Is there typically this much North American content in each issue? If so, would you fellows care to have me send some more Canadian content from time to time?
It occurs to me that the lads there in Britain must be at quite a disadvantage in trying to capture the look and flavour of our Canadian prototypes from such a dis tance. I can only imagine how it would be for me to try to capture the subtleties of, for instance, an English branchline railway scene just from what I can find in books etc.
For instance (and this is not a criticism but rather an observation), the article by Mr Corkill regarding the CNR and CPR cabooses describes somebody modelling the extremely rare exception of shortened CPR cabooses and centrecupola CNR cabooses with the earlier solid riser design steps, rather than the normal offset cupolas, and open lattice steps that were built in the hundreds. The picture on the bottom of page 20 shows one of these rare exceptions and this can be explained very simply.
You can clearly see the latest shopping date of 31125 which has this exGTR van just 26 months into CNR ownership and having probably its first shopping, re packing journals, servicing brake compo nents, repainting the car and applying the new Canadian National lettering. The CNR inherited a vast fleet of cabooses of this and similar designs, in generally poor

• ANSELL FERRY – THE MODEL RAILROAD
The opportunity has arisen to be the new owner of the unique
Chicago Great Western Model Railroad layout Ansell Ferry.
Lovingly built and nurtured over the last 10 years, the layout, measuring 35 ft × 15 ft, has its own purposemade leg system and lighting gantry.
A large proportion of the rolling stock is also for sale (or maybe to purchase separately), to include a 40car CSX coal train, plus TOFC and COFC train, a 30car tank train, plus much of the mixed freight, all having been authentically weathered.
You may have seen the stock running the rails at exhibitions!
The new owner will need a large room to set the layout up for their own enjoyment, or the energy and enthusiasm to continue with its adventures around the exhibition circuit.
If you have a serious interest in purchasing, please contact Steve Adcock on 01242 226860 (evenings) or email steveadcock@ douglasequipment.com for more details and information on asking price.
