The American Model Railroad Group is once again looking forward to our next meet. We have passed our 25 meet mile stone, and enjoy seeing our regular cus tomers, some of whom have now become good friends.
The format is much the same, being hopefully six model railroads, the usual home made cakes and a jolly good raffle, usually more than ten prizes. We must also mention the excellent fish & chip lunches available just across the road in the village.
We now have firm confirmation of our next meet date: 16 Feb 2008 at St Mary’s Parish Centre, Green Road, Alverstoke. Starts 10.30 am.
As a group we are progressing well, with two layouts under construction, and gaining new members from time to time, and still have room for a few more. We are a friendly bunch – ask anyone who has been before, we will allow you to run your own trains (at your own risk) or allow you to run ours, under supervision. Do come
along, £1 an adult, and 50p for children – you know it makes sense!

A few of our local group are actively considering going to next year’s National and I wonder how many more are out there. I know it is early days, but it would be quite good to see who wants to go and start thinking about pairs (for rooms) and numbers for cars to be hired (for those who want to get
out and about).
Our tour will take in the Convention plus Cajon Pass and Tehachapi at least; some may want to go out early to attend the SFRH&MS convention on 8–13 July in Riverside, just a 40minute drive up Freeway 91 from Anaheim.

The recent letter from Mike Carter advising that defective wheelsets on Proto 2000 locos could be replaced on application to Walthers could not have been better timed, as I have been trying to find out what was wrong with several of my P2000 locos for some time. I checked all of my locos, and found several which had cracked wheelsets. The faulty ones were easy to find by attempting to twist the wheels in opposite directions – if they move, the gear is cracked. An email to Walthers produced the required number of replacements in quick time. Thanks Mike, for sharing this with us.

“Dear Editor . . .
Regarding Terry Wynne’s comments upon the disappointing number of competition entries. I would remind him of an HO Canadian passenger car that he showed me at Kegworth in 2006. The detail was
phenomenal, and as Terry pointed out, was the standard of detail to aim for. Whilst said with the best of intentions, it was also a portent of the decline in kit bashing.
The same is true in Oscale and #1 scale. The amount of detail, and its rigidity leaves very little room for improvement. When taken with the short runs of obscure roadnames, the need to kitbash becomes even less necessary.
Despite having been vilified at Kegworth for omitting brakegear – I’d have thought that the square wheels showed that such stuff wasn’t needed – I shall be putting something onto the competition table, under an alias, and in Canadian colours. I wasn’t at Ipswich due to the difficulties of getting there. The rail trip was too long and complicated, and whilst I don’t expect to be catered for exclusively, Father Time now makes me consider driving times. However, I can understand the choice of venue being central to the majority of members (London, then Manchester) – but, Ipswich?
This isn’t a criticism of last year’s organ isers, but merely pointing out the prob lems of using venues with poor transport links.”
