P. 3

The South Shore show at Lancing went down a treat in March. So nice (for me!) not to have to travel halfway across this crowded island to enjoy a few hours of model railroad activity.
A bustling crowd (and enrolling a few new BR members) indicated that there is plenty of interest in our splendid hobby.
The next target for me is the Alton Ltd show in July, by which time I will have hopefully done another round trip to the wilds of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania – well, not all of it is wild perhaps, but hopefully The Hills Are Alive to the Sound of Air Horns, and in some cases steam whistles.
As the lighter, warmer days come along, we usually think of this as a slack time for modelling. But as I do a lot of model repair work in my garage, I find it much more pleasant to be able to have the door open fully, exchange abuse with the passers-by (especially the ones who make “chuff- chuff” and “choo-choo” sounds as they stroll past. However they do tend to hurry on when I lift my lead-headed mallet.). Seriously, though, quite a few times somebody has called, “Can I have a look?”
They often turn out to either be modellers themselves, or have some other vague connection with trains. Those unused to the American scene will generally marvel at the impressiveness, even in HO scale, of a Big Boy or a massive Centennial diesel, being more familiar with 0-6-0 tank engines maybe!
Perhaps one of the biggest surprises I had, up at my previous house (I’m probably talking about 1976 here) was when a smartly dressed young man strolled down the path, looked over the top of the skyscene and remarked, “Ah a railroad modeller – advanced too, using Kadee couplers!” Well, you could have knocked my socks off.
Still the word does seem to be spreading, so the more the merrier.
And while I am talking about “more”, we are getting short of material again, so dig out the pens and cameras please!
Please note, in Division Diary, a change of date for Red Dragons’ November meeting, from the 7th to the 21st.

  Call for Nominations for
all BOD posts
New Vice President Required
Nominations are being sought now for the 2009–2010 term for all five British Region BOD posts of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Membership Director. This is the usual annual call for nominations, mandated by our Constitution, irrespective of whether the incumbents intend to continue in their posts or not. However, at the AGM this Autumn, Tim Rudge our President will be stepping down at the end of his term and Mike Arnold, our Vice President, is expected to take over this vacated post. Therefore a new Vice President is required.
Nominations should indicate the name of the nominee and the position nominated for, and should be signed by the nominee, the proposer and seconder. All three persons should be current members of the NMRA and British Region. Nominations should be received by the Ballot Chairman, Rai Fenton, at 43 Essex Road, Chingford, London E4 6DG by 1 August. If more than one nomination is received for a post, a postal ballot will be held in October of all Region members.
Any queries, or to obtain nomination forms, please contact Rai on 020 8529 7307 or via email at ballotchair@nmrabr.org.uk.
