Announcement about a new sponsorship
The British Region of the NMRA is pleased to announce a new very generous sponsorship deal with Model Junction.
We must at this point acknowledge the ongoing support provided by LSWR and other traders. This includes the sponsorship of competitions and the practice of traders who support us at Region Meets and Conventions. For example, instead of paying a fee for tables, they provide prizes for the raffles. These are often very generous – expensive engines at the Benson do.
What is the deal with Model Junction?
The Region and Model Junction have now agreed (29 September 2009) that the sponsorship will commence immediately. The sponsorship years are for each year ending 30 April (Model Junc- tion’s year end) and the allocated monies are £500 per annum. There is a definite agreement in place until 30 April 2011, and that continued support will rely on growth of the NMRA.
A number of colleagues were involved in the discussions: the Board of Directors (BOD), and other officers of NMRA Region (Terry Wynne, contests; Nobby Clarke, meets and conventions; and Mike Hughes, marketing).
Operation
The BOD will allocate the monies after discussion with interested parties – usually in the form of a grant. Interested groups are invited to put forward potential projects for the current year. John Hey and Nobby Clarke will announce the way the second year’s sponsorship will be applied.
Objectives of sponsorship
Any projects will need to satisfy the objectives of both Model Junction and the NMRA. These can be summarised in the following way. For Model Junction, the thrust of their support is in attracting ‘new’ members to the NMRA, where they can feel that support and guidance is available to develop their current
skills. If this can include ‘new’ to North American modelling and/ or the hobby, particularly in the lower age groups, so much the better.
The NMRA British Region wishes to increase awareness of the NMRA, to attract new members and to provide extra benefits for existing members.
Some potential projects of mutual benefit are shown in the attached table.
     Possible areas for sponsorship
Examples
     Contests
Dioramas at Swindon and micro layouts last year (both sponsored by LSWR Models)
   Themed Meets
Recent Crewe Meet
     Sponsorship of Headline Events
The 2010 Convention, Sponsored by Model Junction
     NMRA British Region Open Days
This is developing Model Junction’s idea of an open day at the Slough Trading Estate conference/meeting room. He has used this twice to showcase Peter Marriott’s scenic modelling and Mike Carter’s wooden building kit construction techniques.
This concept could be repeated in other areas to avoid a South England bias. Crewe would again be a good venue for this. Perhaps two events a year, one at Slough (or elsewhere in the South) and another at Crewe (or elsewhere in the North).
   Signature Clinics
Pelle Soeborg’s clinic at the Copdock Convention showed that a well-presented clinic attracts good attendance.
