P. 3

As I start this column, the Spring Meet is just around the corner – 4 days to go! It is nice to have a meet almost in my back yard – well, Bognor (of which Felpham is almost a suburb) is one of my fairly regular visiting spots, mainly due to the presence of Squires’ store. Squires is one of those wonderful places that, while having no model rail road stuff at all (though I have seen Peco Point motors and Greenscene scenic material there on occasion), is an Aladdin’s Cave of tools and materials. It is such a pleasure to be able to walk into a single shop and get tiny “numbered” drills, metric screws, electronics, K&S brass, Plastruct, and all those useful items that you have just run out of!
Of course they stock adhesives, solvents and paints – if only they knew about Floquil. Oh well, you can’t have everything – not on your doorstep anyway.
The Spring Meet heralds a series of enjoyable events for us Southerners, as we go through the year towards Benson’s “Not the Winter Meet”, The Alton Ltd, and the Seaboard Southern show at Horsham.
Of course all this points in the direction of the Kegworth 65th Anniversary Convention – a bit further for us Southerners but at least we get to sleep over!
Shortly after we put this issue to bed, Mrs Editor and I are off across The Pond again, and so far as I can tell we will get to at least two good model railroad stores (stock up on the Floquil amongst other things!). I have Bull Street Station (Savannah) in my sights, and Ready to Roll in Miami.
On the prototype front, two of our usual watering holes will be revisited, Cordele and Folkston, both in Georgia. Cordele is particularly interesting as the main railfanning spot is a diamond crossing of CSX and NS, both very busy lines, and the diamond itself is crossed by a local short line called HOG (Heart of Georgia RR).
Folkston is of course one of the busiest spots in the region, as it is the coming together of the two heavily used CSX lines from the north, one from Waycross, the other coming down the east coast, funnelling traffic in and out of Florida, which is only a few miles south. So no doubt we will see one or two trains!
By the time this issue lands on your mat, it will only be three or four weeks to Benson, so hope to see yah’all there.
By the way, please note a change of Red Dragons meet date in Division Diary. Saturday 11 September is can celled, and replaced by a meet on 4 September.
