narrow slate pillars that closely matched the slate we already had – see Photo 6. We realised these could be used to make a slate wall only 4 inches deep. They were quite expensive, but needs must.
Looking back at the finished railway shown in the last article, you will see that the upper level is relatively narrow and the track overlays the lower and intermediate levels on a trestle. At the lefthand end, however, the site is wide enough for an 8foot radius upper loop to extend to a curved wall next to the lower
level with its 4feetdiameter loop. We realised that this meant that to get a level upper area 8 feet wide we would need to add soil at that end. Having experienced enough of the heavy clay we were removing, we decided to buy in some goodquality soil, and the heavyduty builders’ wheelbarrow already used to take out clay and bring in rocks was now used once more.
The site was now ready for building the rock faces, and this is dealt with in the next article.
