P. 3

I have been a little concerned over the last year or so about the amount of Region articles and information that is available but NOT sent to Roundhouse for publication. Several times a member has asked me why a particular meet or event was not an nounced in Roundhouse, to which I can only reply, “Because nothing about it was sent to me!”
I know we live in an electronic age, but bear in mind that Roundhouse goes to over 600 people, most of whom do at least flick through it before it lands in the waste paper bin (sorry, I mean the recycling box). A lot of electronic communication gets viewed by relatively few members.
I find it particularly odd when, on an occa sional visit to our region website, I find some meet (or other) information posted there which was never sent to me. I should stress that I do not make a point of trawling through the website in order to pick up such information by accident.
Even more telling is that some items I do receive come from nonmembers and relate to nonBR events, which I am happy to pub licise as they include North American outline interest. Those organisers regularly send me details of their annual events, which hope fully benefit from such exposure. So when sending out news by email or onto websites, please copy me in (in good time!) and your publicity will be enhanced.
Further to that, group and subdivision con tacts, please don’t forget to send me your meet dates for 2015, for the December Roundhouse, and any other information you would like published.
Another recurring discussion is what should go into Roundhouse and what should not. So for example some members say, “Exclude ‘My Railfanning Holiday’ articles and photos.” But an equal number (at least) say they like such material, especially when it concerns visits they are unable to make themselves. Most modellers model the real thing in some form. What can be more informative than reports and pictures of the real thing? You might say this can only benefit modern image, but there is plenty to be gained from preserved equipment, tourist lines, and even short lines using “yesterday’s” diesels. Anyway, the point I am making is that we are unlikely to please every one of our 600+ members with every article. On the whole the general mix seems to go down reasonably well. If you feel any particular aspect is sadly lacking in articles, write one for us!
Meanwhile I look forward to meeting up at the Bournemouth convention, and hope fully filling the December issue with won derful photos (NO, I mean of layouts, not the waitresses! . . . Oh, I don’t know though . . .).
