Marketing Report – September 2014 Mike Hughes
Out marketing aims for 2014 were set out in a document prepared and submitted to the BOD in December 2013.
Among these aims were: distributing new brochures, updating existing Continental Modeller advert, having presence at as many exhibitions as possible, ‘sharing know-how’ clinics, enhancing website content and functionality, articles in model, local and national press. How have we measured up so far?
Brochures. These have been distributed at shows but the major effort has been by Ron Gager who has been very pro- active and is sending brochures to members living in places where there are shows due to take place.
Continental Modeller advert. This has been updated and we have taken a 12 months’ placement. Mike Inghams tells me that we are getting regular enquiries as a result of this advert. Exhibition presence. We have been represented at various shows throughout the Region. We are making a special effort to get greater representation throughout the whole of the country. We’re looking to enhance our image in the northern part of the country. Spaces have been already booked at Leeds (Oct 2014), York 2015 and we are working on Manchester.
Sharing know-how Clinics. Among other locations, Brighton Model World has been a test bed for many of our ideas. It has
proved that our clinics are well received. We are always looking for people to run these clinics. It doesn’t have to be something involving a high degree of skill. In fact we’ve found that clinics on the ‘basic’ skills often attract the most interest.
Website. We are still working on the website. Watch out for announcements.
Articles in model and local press. Peco are about to publish a Special on Modelling American Railways. Our information is that the majority of contributions are from NMRA members. In addition to our half-page advert we have submitted an article detailing the history and aims of the Region, together with some photos. This has strengthened our association with Peco, who also publish Continental Modeller. We are also working with members to submit items to local papers.
Summary: Our marketing is on track for 2014. Listening to feedback from you all has already resulted in a number of very useful initiatives to help promote the hobby. As Marketing Co- ordinator I will be looking to update the plans for 2015. The Convention in October is your chance to help. Do you have any ideas or suggestions to help get our message across? You can either send me your ideas by email to marketing@nmrabr.org. uk or just tell me when you see me at the Convention.
