NMRA BR Bournemouth Convention 2014 Contest report
It was great to see a rise in the number of entries in the model and photo contests this year. Indeed, there were entries present in the room even before it was officially opened for business. We had 38 entries in all: 17 photos, 20 models, and one railroad pass; that latter I’ve not seen entered in the UK before. And of the 20 models, five were awarded Merit Awards. Very well done to those modellers in particular, and indeed well done to all the entrants, modellers and cameramen, for sharing their work with us all and offering inspiration to others.
Some classes only had one entrant, and so didn’t attract official placing, but below are all the winners.
Looking forward to Derby 2015, I’m wondering whether there is an appetite to change the way that we run the modelling part of the contest – bias it more towards the Achievement Program and the gaining of Merit Awards. How about we move the models out into the general exhibition area, like in the past we’ve seen tables of RPM models on show, and encourage the layout exhibitors to consider whether there are structures on their layouts, or even areas of scenery, that would be eligible for AP judging and progress towards certificates? Concentrate more on these aspects and less on the competitiveness of the contest arena, and hopefully too enable more of you to work towards Merit Awards? What do you think of such a suggestion? Might it encourage you to bring models along in 2015 and measure your progress towards AP modelling certificates? Do let me or one of the BoD have your opinion, positive or negative.
Thanks must go to this year’s judges. Keith Webb and Tom Watson worked on the photos while Alain Kap MMR, Tom Griffiths, Vernor Bates and Terry Wynne paid attention to the models. And finally, thanks again to all the entrants, for all their efforts in sharing their work and their know-how.
Now it’s time to start your models and take those photos for 2015. See you in Derby.
