Page 3 - March April 2015
P. 3

Just as the Feb 2015 issue was due to arrive, and I felt the April issue was going to have rather a lot of blank pages, a nice little surge of material arrived. Thanks to all contributors – please keep it coming! Also around that time I (and I expect all BR members) received the National magazine, because it contains ballot papers and candidate information.
One name stirred my memory – Joe Gelmini, who is up for election as Eastern Director. Back in 1995, my first visit to the Atlanta area, the National Convention was going to be held there. We could not visit at that time but were going over a few months earlier. Having contacted the locals, as usual, for information on where to watch trains and buy models, I received a big pack of excellent convention material which included all the good trackside restaurants and so on (which I have used many times since).
But one of the offers was for me and the missus to be taken around some of the places and activities planned for con ventioneers. The highlight was a visit to the then Norfolk Southern training school at McDonough, a few miles south of Atlanta. After being taken around the signal training school, the welding department, going down into the well underneath a Geep and so on, we arrived at the engineers’ training area and had the great pleasure of driving in the cab of an SD60 simulator. The NS training department was run by Joe
Gelmini (now retired) and he made us very welcome!
Just to add a little variety, a friend of mine, who is not into trains but enjoyed leafing through some past “Roundhouse” issues he spotted at my house, offered to contribute a railroadbased crossword. He researched it himself and came up with a perfectly usable little puzzle, which you can play with in this issue. (I admit to helping with the clues!)
We are delighted to welcome the new back cover advertisement from Rapido this month. Thanks to Terry Wynne, who approached his friend Jason Shron, the founder of Rapido in Canada, when we learned that sadly SPV would no longer be able to advertise with us. Jason is taking the full back cover advert for a full year and they have numerous intriguing new products in the pipeline. We welcome another new “full page” advertiser for the coming year, Sophie Cull, of Anoraks Anonymous, who purchase used model railway equipment, especially North American, and attend numerous shows including NMRA events. Please mention “Roundhouse” if purchasing products in response to these adverts, and indeed any of our other regular advertisers who so kindly support us.
