These were rebuilt from B50-6 boxcars in the 1930s as the SP was short of cabooses; a total of 124 boxcars were rebuilt into cabooses, the vast majority but not all from B50-6s.
Below: holes drilled for grabs and handrails – about sixty #79 holes
  The emergency cabooses lasted in service well into the late 1940s with some in use up to 1954. They were mainly converted during WW2 although a few were converted in the late 1930s and 1940
