  Martin Harvey Boyask
We have lost a good friend. That fills us with sadness at our loss (and his family’s loss). But this issue of Round- house is for us to celebrate the life and times of Martin. He was indeed a good friend to the Region. Martin was editor of Roundhouse for 34 years and Treasurer before that. What a record! So he will be a hard act to follow. This issue bears witness to the warmth with which he was held.
I would like to add a personal note to what others have said. In my time as Vice President and President, Martin was always a good council to me. Honest and direct, but always understanding and supportive.
Being President is an Honour, but it brings with it a share of difficulties — personal and organisational. Martin was always there for me. That may sound selfish of me, but it marks Martin as a man I am grateful I knew.
I always liked his humour. At his funeral, I was talking to his daughter. I asked her name. Katy she said, Dad named me after a Railroad.
Rest in peace Martin.
The New Roundhouse Team
I must thank Peter Bowen for stepping up to produce Roundhouse. We have decided to build on the work and perseverance of Martin Boyask and to put in place a team to produce Roundhouse in the future. Key to that will be Peter Bowen as the Roundhouse Publisher. A role that makes good use of his professional skills and his enthusi- asm for our Hobby.
As the Vice President says elsewhere we are appealing for volunteers: a new Roundhouse Contributing Editor
(to work with Peter and proactively seek contributions of articles and photographs from our membership and to review their written and photographic contributions) and a Membership Renewals Officer to work with the Member- ship Director. Names to David McLaughlin please.
Volunteering
I know it has been said many times before. Organisa- tions such as the NMRA depend on volunteers. I have found volunteering rewarding as well as frustrating. But on balance I am glad to I have done it: my opportunity to give back to the organisation that has been fundamental to all the pleasure that the hobby has given me. So as I approach my retirement from office, please support the team: both the BoD and all the others such as Appointed Officers and Divisional Organisers.
Peter Bowen has worked hard on your behalf to produce this issue. As has David McLaughlin (Guest editor) and Steve Scott (Co-ordinating the Directory). Others too have been involved: please join them.
When I was a kid a popular saying was “Many hands make light work”.
In the June 2017 issue of Roundhouse Tom Winlow’s article “card Systems for Freemo” reminded me of my attendance at the Freemo events at Merstham near Redhill and Christow in Devon. Both organised by teams of volunteers. Their work on behalf of NMRA members is wonderful. I attended each of them as a day visitor.
I enjoyed the enthusiasm and friendship of the days and appreciated, at first hand, the fruits of the hard work.
On my retirement from Office (October 2017) I intend to build a module and join the fun. As Tom said at the end of his article, enjoy both at home and then with others at the Freemo events.
The Convention
If you haven’t signed up for the Convention yet, there is still time. I hope to see you all there and enjoy your company. To be held at the Derby Conference
Centre, Derby, DE24 8UX 27th, 28th & 29th October 2017 and thank you to all of the volunteers at Black Diamonds for graciously hosting the event.
