On Saturday 15th September, I attended the Seaboard Southern event held at the Charis Centre, Crawley. What an excellent day it turned out to be. There was a good variety of high quality layouts in various scales and gauges, trade support, and extensive sec- ond hand/pre owned items for sale. A fellow NMRA member brought to my attention a nicely detailed Athearn Rio Grande wide vision caboose which I purchased for a mod- est amount, but the find of the day, for me, was thanks to NMRA member, Richard Max- well. I was spending time at the NMRA stand and Richard went over to the pre owned models and came back with an HO model
of a Rio Grande steam generator car #250. (He knows that I am a Rio Grande fan). Briefly, the Rio Grande, in May 1953, converted the tender from a Mallet locomotive class L-105 #3703 for steam heating purposes and #251 from the same class when presumably the 6 FTB’s were to lose their steam heating boilers in the same year. It’s a lovely model which will run with my passenger cars on my home layout.
A big thank you must go to all the people for making the day such a success. It’s no mean achievement to organ- ise such a successful day and the hours of planning and preparation which is necessary for the enjoyment of you, the members who attended, and those members of the
public who visited on the day. A note for your diaries: next year’s show is Saturday 21st September 2019.
By the time you are reading this, the Derby Convention will be in our memories and I hope as many of you as possible attended for the whole weekend, or if not possible, as a day member. It’s such an ideal way
to catch up with members we don’t see very often, and those we do, and generally having an enjoyable and relaxing week- end, together with all the other benefits of attending a Convention.
I look forward to seeing you at the Benson Winter Meet on the 13th January. Please note that the meet is being held on a Sunday for the first time. The reason for the change or experiment has been prompted by requests from members as a Sunday is a more convenient day because of work commitments. It is my intention to spend time at the front table meeting and greeting members as they arrive. I know it will be busy at times and I will be taking the entrance
fee with a fellow member, but do say hello and introduce yourself if I don’t know you. So, see you at Benson on the Sunday.
