 Solving Paint
and Decal Supply Problems
David Clarke
NYC 2-8-0 models and photos by David Clarke
I paint and weather American locos Recently I managed to solve two issues it should be or does not have any visible
both for myself and for other peo- ple, but have found difficulties with the supply of the correct paint and
decals. This is due to some of the paint and decal manufactures stopping pro- duction. As far as decals are concerned Microscale are the only ones readily available but they don’t do all the smaller steam roads.
All locos are etch primed (two pack) before a top coat of Black Cellulose as this gives a bright surface for the decals.
Once the decals are on then it’s a coat of satin varnish and then some weath- ering, usually in enamels. If the loco is not black then I usually use Enamel paint from the Precision range.
 as follows:
PRR loco green. In the past I had a sup- ply of Scalecoat paint but this was not a paint I am a fan of, having a tendency not to completely dry
unless placed in the
oven and I was never
really convinced about
the colour. PRR Green
is almost black and the
Scalecoat version was
much lighter. I have
painted a couple of
Brass PRR locos for my-
self but was never really
happy with the colour. The colour used by the RTR manufacturers (Proto 2000 and Broadway) is in my view lighter than
green tint but I notice that some of the more recent models the colour is much darker and closer to the prototype. With no accurate supply of the correct paint

colour. However after a visit to Precision paints stand at the Warley exhibition I found what I thought was the correct colour, I needed the darkest green I could find. The solution was North British Loco green (Precision Paint code P676 NBR Olive Green), a really dark green and in my view the closest match to the prototype. I sprayed up a sample and was satisfied that it would be accu- rate enough.
I then painted the PRR electric in the photo above and found that is was per- fect. The model has not been completely re-assembled as I just wanted a photo
of the colour. The loco exhibits another problem in that when built there was a single green stripe starting in the centre of the nose and then down the side of the loco. However we could not find any decals and the customer found a photo of the loco without the stripe so that’s how it will be finished.
