I have been very fortunate that I have been able to attend many Conventions over the years spanning venues such as Bourne- mouth, Derby, Kegworth, Poole, Swindon, and this year at Aberdeen. Each one I
have enjoyed and gone home inspired and rejuvenated for the coming year and the opportunities that being a member of the NMRA BR presented to me.
This year the Convention at Aberdeen was no exception. The clinics I attended were inspiring especially for me the clinic ‘Is Model Railroading Art?’ by Rob Clark and the clinic presented by Ralph Renzet- ti,‘Workbench to MainlineWeathering
A to Z’. In the past I have gained knowl- edge and experience using an airbrush, washes, and powders. So, if you are a novice like me when it comes to weath- ering, leave that expensive locomotive or freight car in their boxes and practice on an inexpensive item until you are satisfied with the progress you have made. Then you can unpack that expensive item
with confidence and weather it to your satisfaction.
In addition, over the weekend, I was pleased to see the other important side of our hobby. The social side.Away from the railroad rooms, members were sitting
or standing around in the bar area, having a drink, or at meal times talking railroad- ing topics or having conversations away from model railroading. The social side of our hobby is so important and friendships formed which can last forever. It may be that you meet on a regular basis at an NMRA event, at a club, or you only meet up occasionally in someone’s home but the social side of our hobby should never be overlooked.
Our first meeting in 2020 will be at Benson and this year it is being organised
by Mick Moignard and Keith Webb. They have put together a good selection of layouts in On30, N Gauge, and the new HO layout built by Ant Quinlan, Kamiak Falls. There will be the usual traders in attendance so you will be able to source some of those items on your shopping list. This year catering will be provided by Too Perfection who will be serving light lunches, snacks, cakes, and a selection of drinks. In addition there will be ample space provided for bring and buy and also a raffle.
It is my intention to spend some time at the reception desk taking the entrance fee but more importantly to speak to ex- isting members and introducing my myself to those members who do not know me. I will also be pleased to discuss any issues members may have about the Region and the BoD vision for the future. Information can be found on our website and also the Region App. Finally, the event takes place on Sunday 2nd February 2020 at The Par- ish Hall, Benson, Oxfordshire, OX10 6LZ between 10am and 4pm. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.
