Great Northern Icon

Post by brianc »

29th May 2016 marked the centenary of the death of James J Hill, founder of the Great Northern. His choice of name for his new railroad was influenced by another Great Northern Railway. Sadly both are gone, but not forgotten. 7 years after the death of Hill this lady was born and later in her life did visit America although not her namesake road. She is definitely not gone and not forgotten.

Just managed to get this video before departing to the Summer Meet at Benson.

Great Northern is one of the very finest and most enduring fallen flags, isn't it? Just look at the number of models commercially produced still in the railway's post-war livery. So eye catching and attractive even though it was current for barely 25 years. Many noteworthy aspects to this railway company and its many successes, not least that it never went bankrupt. Long live the Great Northern!
