UNCOUPLED
   From Ellis James-Robertson...
Hi Martin.
Normally for spraying I use an air brush but for small items that need to be covered in black or another base colour I have a few cans of aerosol spray. Needing to blacken a couple of Athearn underframes I put them on a small plastic tray, shook my can of Matt Black the suggested two mins’. and made a few passes. No problem, they were nicely covered but needed repositioning and a final couple of passes. I put the aerosol down, moved the underframes, picked up the aerosol and pressed the button - it just moved sideways and a fine spray of paint erupted upwards. I tried to replace it and got my hand covered in paint which continued to bubble out as there was no way to stop it. Fortunately I had gone outside so dumped the can in a flower bed where it continued to bubble for 25 mins until it was empty. Thus the damage is no more than a black part of the flower bed, had I been inside there would have been a nasty mess. Although I have had a spray button come off before I have always been able to place it back on and continue spraying this is the first time I was unable to. I took the can back to the store and they replaced it but the manager said he has known it happen before, particularly with the larger size cans - so be warned!

Pat also has some 50 “switch” timbers about 34’ long in HO, some “Block Occupancy Detectors” and 2 or 3 motherboards to hold them. The second (unconnected) problem stems from the September 11th terrorism and only involves those of us who might get to the States for some rail- fanning. Railroad security has been stepped up and railfans could find themselves under suspicion. While genuine fans behaving responsibly are still mostly regarded with some respect by the industry, employees have been told to report instances of young men (in particular) asking for in-depth information about train times, ladings, and other information concerning railroading. Obviously it might happen that photography of railroad installations and trains could occasion some concern. This even extends to suspicion regarding people in cars pacing trains over any distance. It might be advisable to have your NMRA membership card with you!!
