NMRA(BR) Convention 2009
The Swindon Arrow 23, 24 and 25 October
Hilton Hotel, Lydiard Fields, Swindon, SN5 8UZ
We are continuing to plan what will hopefully be an enjoyable weekend for you all. The trip to Pendon Museum is filling up. At the time of writing this, a guide has been offered by Pendon Museum to meet us at the Hotel, and who will travel on the coach with us through the Vale of the White Horse and point out some of the prototype buildings on which the Pendon Modelling team have based their models displayed in the museum. The coach will then call into a pub where sandwiches and other light snacks will be served (the drinks are not included), then the coach will take you to the Museum which is undertaking a private viewing especially for those on the trip. The members will be shown around the museum and it is hoped that they will be able to see the Madder Valley, The Dartmoor Scene and Pendon Parva all operating. Pendon Parva is an exquisite 4mm scale model of the Vale of the White Horse set in the 1930’s, right down to a Cabbage White butterfly! So, if you want to take part in this trip, please send in your form, because we can only take a maximum of 40 members.
The Ladies’ trip to Bath on Saturday has, to date, been rather poorly subscribed. All those who have booked already will be taken to Bath, but spaces may be limited as we are considering reducing the size of the coach to reduce the costs incurred in hiring a larger coach which may end up being less than half full. Ladies who have not booked in advance and then decide they want to go once they arrive at the Convention are therefore likely to be disappointed!
The Friday night meal (Carvery) is to be held in the Banqueting
Hall so that everyone can dine together, and we will have the entertainment of a light hearted band which will start playing towards the end of the meal. We are hoping this should be enjoyable for all. The Banquet is to be held on the Saturday night as usual. For any member who is not staying in the hotel for the weekend, but would like to come to the banquet, the team have arranged this at a cost of £25.00. If anyone would like to take up this offer can you please contact Kay, as we need to collect a completed menu form and payment from you, which will then be forwarded to the hotel.
Take up of weekend places is steady, but the hotel will shortly release any reserved rooms not taken, which could result in the hotel filling the available rooms with other weekend guests so, if you haven’t yet booked, and are intending to stay the weekend, please can I urge you to send in your booking form as soon as possible.
For those of you who may have missed the newsflash in the last issue of Roundhouse, we have managed to renegotiate the cost of staying on the Thursday night to £90 B&B for a double room and £80 B&B for a single room.
The Show will open to members at 12:00 noon on Friday and will also be open to members of the public on Saturday. We have 15 layouts confirmed, which include, Mill Falls, Devils Creek, Camp 93, The Nutscale Project, Bitter Creek, Waukegan & Kenosha Terminal and Crapsville. Some have not been seen at an NMRA(BR) Convention before. We have several traders also confirmed; these include LSWR, Mac’s Model Railroading, Plus Daughters, John Parker, Brian’s Trains, SPV and OnTrack (Hornby International).
We have space for 5 clinics to be held on the Saturday in a large lecture room which should be capable of seating up to 100 or so people. At the time of writing not all clinics have been confirmed, but we do have secured Iain Rice to speak in two of the clinics, one of which will be based on his new Kalmbach book ‘Shelf Layouts’. It is intended to hold a couple of smaller clinics on the
