So another year rolls to a close. If you are a group contact, please make sure you have sent in whatever information you have for your 2014 meetings, open days, exhibitions, dates, venues and so on. I have heard once or twice this year that when poor attendance has been evident at a show, for example, it turns out that little or no publicity was arranged beforehand!
Bear in mind that Roundhouse goes out to something like 600 or more people, whereas it seems the various websites have a much lesser readership.
I often get reports or information from the Bearwood and Gosport groups, both of which seem to be successfully developing programmes of events both for themselves and for public viewing. The active local groups often come over as the heart of the region, in enthusing their visitors and often adding to membership. This emphasises that there is a social side to the hobby as well as a purely modelling side. At Region and local meets, nattering to friends (often ones we only get to see at such events) can be as enjoyable and productive as studying the layouts and restocking from the traders.
It seems, as usual, that it only takes a small number of hard-working and enthusiastic members to generate the conditions and atmosphere necessary to produce such successful groups. The new Kent & East Sussex group, under the guidance of Mike Arnold, has sprung up and is developing nicely, with visits to each other's home layouts, a regular E-Newsletter and so on. Often it is the “organising” sections of such groups that go on to arrange the bigger, Regional events for us, such as conventions. As the old cliché goes, “Ask not what BR can do for you, but what can you do for BR!!”
In the same vein, welcome and thanks to Peter Lloyd-Jones for taking on the task of Region BoD Secretary, and no doubt now busy sharpening his ball-point pen ready for action!
Finally, look at Nick Prior’s comments, regarding his first convention attendance, in Uncoupled Cars. Quite heart-warming – a topic for discussion maybe?
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All!
