From John Knight
Re: “Back to Basics” on track, in the last issue. I vividly remember in 1959 standing next to a busy junction complex as a succession of steam- hauled coal trains left Stockton-on-Tees yard, heading for the Middlesbrough area. The ground shook and the noise of wheels on rails was nearly deafening. I have attempted to incorporate
this into my layouts.
I glue the track onto 5 mm ply laid on a very light frame, and
file notches in the railheads at scale length joint intervals. The result is a very realistic drumming rumble.
I can only assume that Mr Webb has never heard the prototype sound, as he advocates insulating model track from the baseboards with cork mat or similar. I am at a loss to understand why, since in the age of DCC sound effects it is an attempt to eliminate one of the most fundamental!
Ed’s Note: Since the advent of DCC, sound has become a frequent talking point. Some love it, some hate it! The problem I personally feel is that, however realistic the basic sound is, the way it presents itself from a layout to one’s ears can be very different from what is heard “train watching”. This is especially brought home if you are stuck behind a stand or layout at a show, and a nearby sound-equipped layout is blasting your ears off all day! As always, “each to their own”!
News Release
Following the sudden notice to quit from the new owners of the clubroom, Seaboard Southern are now looking for alternative permanent accommodation. In the interim we have secured the use of a room at The Charis Centre, Crawley (same venue as our September show) for monthly meets on a Saturday. The exact date of the initial meet is yet to be confirmed, but please check the group website (www.seaboard- southern.org.uk) for dates once they are confirmed.
(all items by the Editor unless otherwise credited)
The Seaboard Southern, formed in 1998, caters for model railroaders living in South East England, mainly West and parts of East Sussex and Surrey (plus a few from Berkshire and Hampshire) who like modelling North American railroading. If you are interested in North American railroads, or even just model railroading in general, you are very welcome to pay us a visit to see what we are all about and to see what we get up to. You will find us a very welcoming and friendly bunch!
After losing our clubroom in Dec 2015 we are planning to meet monthly during the day on a Saturday, initially at The Charis Centre, Crawley. For further details on dates and directions please visit our website, www.seaboard-southern.org.uk. Despite the change in circumstances we will be continuing with previous club activities such as regular ‘Bring & Buy’ events with even the most determined ‘non-spenders’ usually ending up with something to take home and ‘Sharing the Knowledge’ demonstrations (scenery, DCC, loco tune-up, weathering etc) and members’ videos.
Roundhouse Designer needed
Due to work pressure, Jock will no longer be able to provide us with his excellent professional magazine design. Would any member be able, and prepared, to take over this task?
