  RAILROAD REVIEW cont...
be better to remove the springs and solder fine wires from the roof conductors to the floor ones.
5) I don’t much like the jungle of rather stiff wiring that connects the loco and tender. However, it looks a bit better if the wiring and outside of the plugs is painted grimy black. Some owners have reported derailment problems when reversing this set-up around curved track. It could be dispensed with if DCC is never going to be used, but some lesser form of wiring will be needed for normal operation and for the lighting.
6) Check carefully the position of the loco driving wheel wipers. I’m not too crazy about these either, but we are stuck with them, so check that each makes a good contact, in the right position, on the inside of each driver rim. The wipers can be gently bent with small pliers to line them up if off target.
One odd thing about this example of the loco is that the left side eccentric crank is set incorrectly and, so far as I can tell, it cannot be altered without somehow removing the
crankpin and resetting it. The top end of the crank should angle towards the cylinders but this one angles away. This doesn’t affect operation (in the model at least!) but it is an irritation. If it were my own loco, I’d have to do something about it, which would probably involved cementing the crankpin in a slightly different position so that the crank lined up correctly. I don’t entirely agree with the
Bulletin review opinion that the loco packaging is good. The sponge box lining is of the hard black variety with little give in it. Ordinary soft sponge as found around most brass locos is perfectly adequate and the models easier to remove without scratching or damage.
Also, as the loco has fiddly wiring connections to the tender, it would be better if the box were long and narrow so the loco and tender could be stored as one unit without undoing the
wiring plugs.
Finally a note of caution. When handling the mechanism of this loco, have care around the valve gear eccentric rod, where the end of the Baker gear linkage fits into the plastic valve gear hanger (see sketch) - it comes out awfully easily and is a bit of a pig to put back in! ●
