P. 14
The picture on the previous page shows the present temporary control panel. I am running a shakedown using the system in use in operating sessions: the Tower Operator assigns the blocks to the cab for the train in question, and then sets the signals. They work well in assisting crews to run their trains
confidently and safely . . . which was the whole idea in the first place.
I intend in due course to build a permanent panel, with LEDs to repeat the signal aspects. This will likely be installed just beneath the main “tower” panel. How the toggles are mounted in the panel is an important consideration. For instance, which way do we want the levers to point: in the direction of travel, or in the direction to which the green aspect is showing? Sur prisingly enough, this is not a trivial question. Once I’ve figured out and built the best control panel I’ll write it up to share it with you. Perhaps someone out there has a better method, which I’d be very interested to learn about.
Finally, it’s pretty obvious by now that I’m not a digital rail roader. I use cab control and am perhaps rather oldfashioned. All I can say is that I like the handson approach, and that it works for me. In writing this article I’ve assumed for my read ers the same level of knowledge of relays that I had when I started (very little), hence the perhaps wordy nature of my descriptions. I hope it has been worth reading, and may prove useful to you.
A new logo for the British Region
After verifying and counting the votes cast for the proposed new logo, Ballot Chairman Rai Fenton announced the results at the AGM. This showed a clear majority of votes in favour of No 1b. To show continuity this logo will be used alongside the old logo on the header boards for our display material. The new one will be phased in with the issue of new publicity material. I’d like to thank all those who took the time to vote. ============================== Brighton Modelworld 21–23 February 2014 We will once again be taking our display stand to Brighton Modelworld. The format will be similar to this year’s event, which included a small layout, display stand, demonstration tables and module build.
If you can help please let me know, especially if you can help on the Sunday.
